2012 VMA’s Recap: Performances

Last nights VMA’s were pretty vanilla compared to the drama and shockers of past MTV award shows, but the performances definitely made the evening worth watching. Funny man Kevin Hart opened the show as host in the most uncomfortable way possible, making jokes about the beef between Drake and Chris Brown, Frank Ocean’s recent openness regarding his sexuality, and of course Kristen Stewart’s infidelity. Thankfully we sidestepped that awkwardness pretty quickly as Rihanna took to the stage and gave a heck of a performance donning a newly cropped super short brunette ‘do. She sang a mix of “We Found Love” with new tune “Cockiness” alongside A$AP Rocky, as Calvin Harris spun away inside one of the coolest DJ booths in VMA history. It was a hard performance to top, but Pink followed showing off some impressive acrobatics for “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”. It was definitely inspired by cult film “Rocky Horror Picture Show” as she made quite an entrance atop a pair of bright red lips. Frank Ocean has blown up in the airwaves lately, and his heartfelt and soulful delivery of tune “Thinking About You” had the audience swooning and begging for more. His performance was the most tweeted about moment of the VMA’s, and it’s no surprise because it was jaw droppingly fantastic. After Mr. Ocean set the romantic mood with his ‘moonlight’ performance, finally our favorite Brits hit the stage! One Direction happily performed “What Makes You Beautiful” (they did win 3 Moonmen for the tune!) – even Katy Perry sang along in the crowd. Of course as with past tradition, the “Twilight” clan (minus Stewart who was promoting “On the Road” at TIFF last night), took the stage to introduce another peak at “Breaking Dawn Part 2″. November can’t come soon enough! Alica Keys and Nicki Minaj reved up the crowd with “Girl on Fire” where the Olympic Fab Five executed some acrobatics during the set. Taylor Swift closed the show with yet another awesome tune. “We are Never Getting Back Together” has been an office favorite and we were so pleased to see take the stage. It’s really the performances that keep us tuning in year after year. We were so pleased with this years show and we can’t wait to see what’s the come in 2013! How did you feel about last night’s show BeTrenders?
